Well, Netflix. You did it again.
You provided a movie, that was based off of a best selling novel, that I really enjoyed. For those who are not familiar with the premise, the story centers around high schooler Lara Jean. Lara Jean has a hatbox of letters she has written to previous crushes. One day, she encounters one of her former crushes, who notifies her that he doesn't like "in that way." In his hand is one of her letters. Confused, Lara Jean goes home to find her hatbox missing and discovers that someone had mailed her letters to her former crushes. As she tries to figure out who did it while bearing the humiliation that followed, Lara Jean finds herself in contract of sorts with Peter, who proposes that they pretend to be dating. Where to I begin with this? Well, the actors were really superb in this movie. Lana Condor played the role of Lara Jean perfectly, and portrayed her as any teen who would go through something that in not only embarrassing, but invasive. The diversity of the cast was assuring, and the interaction between Lara Jean and Peter (played by Noah Centineo) was believable. The family dynamic between Lara Jean and her sisters was like other family. They're not perfect, but you feel and believe the love these sisters have for each other. There is drama and strife, but it is resolved without being over dramatic. John Corbett kind of faded into the background as Lara Jean's father, but you could kind of let it slide since the focus is on Lara Jean and her misadventures. Overall, this was a very enjoyable movie. There were liberties taken (as always) when adapting from a popular novel, but it does its job and it is worth watching. I give "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" a 4.5/5. I've not really into teen movies, but this one had me hooked from beginning to end. I also recommend reading the series by Jenny Han. It's relatable and realistic, especially for those dealing with unrequited crushes and finding real love.
