Disclaimer: My name is The Library Lady, and I have horrific arachnophobia. Saying that, I must say that I absolutely LOVE So I'm a Spider. So What? The light novel, the manga, the anime. All of it. I know what you are saying. "Library Lady, you're terrified of spiders, but love this show. You're even afraid of Lucas the spider. Are you insane?" The answer to that is yes, but that's besides the point. I think Lucas is cute, but yet he makes me scream internally *shut up*. Besides, who can hate this face? She's adorable!!!! When I was first introduced to the manga, one of my teens was all about it. She even drew Kumoko, the main lead, to perfection. In addition, I found myself relating to Kumoko, a bullied girl who resolves to live her best life on her own terms despite her circumstances. As she is resurrected and doesn't how she died, Kumoko realizes that her new life is like a video game (typical in the isekai genre), and she's been resurrected as a spider. I must note that she is unnamed in the beginning of the story. "Kumo" means Spider and the suffix "-ko" feminizes a word. This allows readers to refer to our heroine as "Kumoko." At first, Kumoko is horrified of the form she is in. Yet when she learns how to adapt to her new world, Kumiko resolves to make sure she can overcome any obstacle that stands in her way. She doesn't just rush into battle. She observes and analyzes each situation, and doesn't back down. That is really admirable. The anime is an edge-on-your-seat, comical rollercoaster that leaves the viewer wanting more. The seiyu (voice actor/actress), Aoi Yuki, does an amazing job in her role as Kumoko. Her performance is just so endearing and entertaining, you automatically feel like you must root for Kumoko as she goes on her journey. Also, Aoi singing the closing theme is so awesome, it's something you have to see for yourself. Trying to describe it just wouldn't do it any justice. All I can say is that it has become one of my favorite themes of all time. Just watching it puts a smile on my face. As the story continues, we see that her classmates have resurrected as well, whether they are mages, elves, or magical creatures. While it really has not been developed yet, we just have to wait and see what happens when Kumoko's classmates encounter her. Will they treat her better or underestimate her? That's pretty much the overall message of So I'm a Spider. So what? Never underestimate others and you can overcome anything that comes your way. That's what makes this show great. It's Kumoko's story, journey, and resolve that makes us continue to root for her. I give So I'm a Spider. So What a 5 out of 5. It's time to root for the underdog (spider?) and it's such a great story to start off the new year.
