When Viz Media announced at NY Comic Con that the In/Spectre anime would be released in 2020, I was very intrigued. I'm a sucker for the supernatural, and I was really looking forward to the anime. I was really hooked by the premise of the story. Iwanaga Kotoko became the god of wisdom to the supernatural beings and spends her days solving problems for them. However, the boy who she fell head over heels for, Sakuragawa Kuro, is someone that is feared by all supernatural creatures. The two of them face various mysterious incidents involving the supernatural in this love x romance x mystery series. Where will these fantastical incidents lead them and what will happen with Kotoko’s crush? (From Crunchyroll) I'm now seven episodes in and I'm hooked. The story is fast paced, suspensful, and comedic at times, but mostly due to Kotoko. She's still a bit immature (I mean, she's seventeen), but when times get rough, she's ready to take action. However, when she's with Kuro, her focus shifts from being a protector to crazy for Kuro's attention (or lack there-of). The dynamic between the two is funny as hell as Kuro shows more annoyance than affection towards Kotoko. I'm sure the romance will develop as the series progresses, but right now it's more platonic on Kuro's end. Added to the mix is Kuro's ex-fiancee, police officer Saki, who leaves Kuro early in the story due to witnessing his powers and finds herself back into his life after a murder committed by a supernatural being takes place. Hell, if something like like that happened without warning, I wouldn't blame Saki for freaking out. She does maintain a healthy friendship with Kuro when they reunite, despite Kotoko showing signs of her jealousy and immaturity by trying to provoke Saki, who's much more mature than the "God of Wisdom." It's humorous and makes you wonder, "is this really what you want , Kuro?!" As for the manga, the story is a nice pace, not overwhelming, and keeps you wanting more. The anime is definitely faithful to the manga so far, and I'm looking forward to more. Since the anime series and manga are still on-going, I'm giving In/Spectre a 4 out of five. It's a well done, gripping story, with hilarious moments to even out the brutality and seriousness of the situations our characters encounter. A very enjoyable to read, and available to watch on Crunchyroll.
