Happy 2020, everyone!!!
So... I should start off by saying that I'm not a huge fantasy fan. I'm really not. However, when I started reading the first volume of Mythical Beast Investigator, I found myself really enjoying the book. Here is the premise of the story: "Ferry is a mythical beast investigator, charged with keeping the peace between humanity and the many magical creatures that populate the world. When a dragon starts attacking a small village, Ferry and her otherworldly bodyguard, Kushuna, go to investigate. They soon discover that the dragon has a good reason for its rampage." First off, the artwork is fabulous. It was not overwhelming, and it just fits the story and the genre. The characters, especially Kushuna, were easy to follow and love. Honestly, everytime Kushuna showed up, I kept thinking of Monty Python and "well, that's no ordinary rabbit." Points if you get the reference and/or you are as old as me. Kushuna is a tall, dark demon rabbit that protects Ferry by any means, and has great comedic banter with her pet bat, Trow. The story itself was enjoyable because, unlike some fantasy stories, there's not a lot of detail. We have the adventure and that's all we really need. While there are some points in the story that needed to be explained, they weren't elaborated to death like most in the fantasy genre. In addition, the compassion Ferry shows to those around her was extremely uplifting and needed in these times. She makes the viewer and her patrons see both sides of the situation they're in. Also, who doesn't want a well-dressed, sarcastic, demonic bunny as a bodyguard?! I mean, Kushuna is awesome! Overall, I give Mythical Beast Investigator a 3.5/5. There's so much more I want to see in this story, and am really curious how this duo got together. Just have to wait until volume 2.
