After reading the debacle known as Yuri is My Job, and still being scarred from that experience, I was hoping to read something that would be a good representation of the Yuri genre.
For those who don't know, Yuri means "girls love" while Yaoi means "boys love." Just so you know ^_^ While reading Yuri is My Job made me seethe and want to throw the book out the window, mostly because of Hime's antics, I found Our Wonderful Days slightly refreshing. Our Wonderful Days is the story of two childhood friends, Koharu (aka Haru) and Mafuyu (aka Fuyu-chan) reuniting at the start of their freshmen year of high school. Years before, Fuyu and her family had moved from the countryside to Tokyo. Even though moving back to the countryside is a culture shock to Fuyu, she finds relief knowing that her friend, Haru, is also attending the same school as her. Joining in this crazy, yet heart-warming, adventure are Haru's other friends, Minori and Nanaya. These two are just precious, especially with Nanaya as the ditzy comic relief. I really enjoyed this story, even though I felt Fuyu was a bit standoffish and clingy, especially when she's with Haru. Readers will immediately tell she has feelings for the girl. It's so obvious. Readers will also experience the dynamic between these characters, especially in scenes displaying how Fuyu treats Nanaya with such contempt when Nayana says something silly. I get it that it's for comedic purposes, but no need to be that cold. I mean, damn Fuyu. Aside from that, the storytelling is just refreshing. It's a beautiful slice-of-life that is not overwhelmingly cute, and it makes you want to know more about these characters. Even the side story of Minori and Nanaya as roommates while attending school makes you wonder about their relationship. Is there more going on that we are being led to believe? Who knows? In addition, the detail of the artwork is beautiful, and just goes with the flow of the story. This is another manga that has me eagerly awaiting volume 2, and would definitely recommend for others to give it a read. I give Our Wonderful Days a 5/5. I really loved it and can't wait for the next volume. And thank god it's so much better than Yuri is My Job! Yeah, I'm still traumatized.
