Hi everyone! As June is winding to a close, and NYC has reopened for business, this Library Lady had found herself preparing for this year's Summer Reading Program, and taking on new roles to help patrons get back on a semi-normal routine. I also celebrated my birthday this month too ^_^ Happy Birthday to me! As June is also Pride month, I thought I would review a book that has become one of my absolute favorites of this year, Boys Run the Riot by Keito Gaku. Boys Run the Riot is the story of Ryo, a transgender teen who is trying to establish his identity. He is not out to his friends and family, who are curious why he rejects wearing girls' outfits and uniforms, and prefers masculine clothing. At a low point, Ryo comes across Jin, a rumored delinquent who is actually a kind-hearted person with dreams of creating his own fashion line. When Ryo comes out to Jin, instead of rejection, Jin shows acceptance and respect to Ryo and asks him to join on his clothing line. This story is such a heartfelt and powerful story that I cannot recommend enough. The representation is genuine and authentic, and it is important to note that the mangaka and staff involved with this project are mostly transgender so the reader is getting a realistic glimpse on the struggle Ryo endures while becoming the person he is. Boys Run the Riot is by far one of the best stories of the year, and becoming one of my top 5 personal favorites. It gets a solid 5/5 from me and is a story you just can't ignore.
