A Library Lady first: a rant.
*These are my opinions. Read at your own risk* So.... this came to my attention a few days ago as I was drinking my morning tea. Apparently, some trolls were bashing the new Captain Marvel movie (including actor James Woods. Seriously >_>) because it was, and I wish I was making this up, ANTI WHITE MALE. Ehhhh WHAT?! Why do they think this? Well, to them the answer is obvious. Girls can't be superheroes. How I read the previous sentence without tossing my computer is beyond me... Um, please explain Wonder Woman, Storm, Black Widow, Starfire, Black Canary, The Wasp, Hawkgirl, Invisible Woman, Jessica Jones, Supergirl/Power Girl, Raven, The Powerpuff Girls.... Just to name a few ;) You would think that in 2019, we would be past the sexism, racism, and all the isms and phobias in general. Sadly, especially with the current political climate, all the isms and phobias are front and center. There was a huge backlash when it was annoucnced that Doctor Who's Thirteenth Doctor was going to be female. While, thankfully, the majority of Doctor Who fans welcomed Jodie Whittaker (myself included because she's AWESOME!!!), others didn't mostly due to the new Doctor being a woman. Now with Captain Marvel, trolls are taking to the internet, purposely giving negative ratings (without seeing the movie) to dissuade people from attending, and instead telling the masses to see Alita: Battle Angel. Because heaven forbid Brie Larson, the star of the movie, is portraying one of Marvel's most powerful superheroes. Why attack Captain Marvel? What makes Alita: BA more special? Is it because we have a movie starring Larson, who's an outspoken feminist? Is it because they're afraid that Captain Marvel, a woman, might be the one to defeat Thanos after the events of Avengers: Infinity War? Or maybe, and this is a stretch, they want Alita to reign because she is a MAN-made cyborg who apparently doesn't market girl power as they claim? Oh the possibilities... But seriously, why do we entertain these trolls? These so-called "gatekeepers" of nerd culture, who have resorted to "openly attack women and people of color on social media and forums, all while claiming to be the victims themselves."(https://theoutline.com/post/7143/captain-marvel-brie-larson-comicsgate-youtube?zd=1&zi=d5joatip). There's a saying that my mother would always tell me: You can't reason with crazy. Seriously, don't they realize in the history of comics, there has been a male and female Captain Marvel? Or that the late, great Stan Lee, creator of Marvel Comics, created some of his legendary heroes to reflect social issues of the time? Hey Gatekeepers, you kind of suck at your job. Please retire or maybe let a woman show you how to do the job properly. In addition, let us real comic fans make our own judgments, and most importantly, keep your negativity and bigotry to yourselves. Ain't nobody got time for that.
