I swear, Retsuko is my new spirit animal.
I literally call this anime, "Adulting 101 with metal." I love this anime so much, that I harassed my own mother (who retired from her job three years ago) to watch this anime. And even she likes it! She's not even an anime fan! Aggretsuko (or Aggressive Retsuko) is so relatable, it's scary. Kudos to Sanrio, the company that created Hello Kitty (no, really) for creating this adorable character we adults can relate to. Retsuko hates her job, her boss, and the majority of her co-workers (with the exception of a few). After work, she blows off steam by going to karaoke and singing Death Metal. I totally love this. Aggretsuko came out in early 2017. Seriously, I own a tote and a lanyard with her face, and never got to watch this until it came out on Netflix this past weekend. There are animated shorts on Youtube, and I'm discovering them now. What took me so long to watch this?! Where have I been?! I'm so glad I got to rectify this. I binged watched the entire show (each episode is 15 minutes long) and I don't regret it. Even Todd Haberkorn (English voice actor of Fairy Tail's Natsu and Soul Eater's Death the Kid) voices a character on this show. Awesomeness! Overall, Aggretsuko gets a 5/5. It's so perfectly done and relatable, it hits every single nail on the head. Not kidding.

Smile!
Sweet! Sister! Sadistic! Surprise! Service! STAHP!!!! For the love of God, stop... The opening theme has been on repeat ever since I started watching this anime. And to be honest, I seriously had to stop myself or I will go mad. As evidenced with all the memes from this wacky anime. Trust me, there's A LOT of memes from the anime. And quite frankly, I enjoyed Blend-S. The anime tells the story of Maika Sakuranomiya, a 16-year-old who is desperately looking for a job. The problem is when she smiles, Maika looks like she's about to murder you and eat your heart. She doesn't mean to do anything sinister. That's just how she looks. When she finds a job at Cafe Stile, she discovers that Dino, the manager who hired her, scouted her because of her "smile." Cafe Stile is a theme cafe, where the staff takes on a trait to portray for their customers. Maika's "role" is to be dominant and sadistic to the customers who are masochists. Not even kidding. Maika tearfully apologizes after the customers leave, hoping that they will return. In addition to this craziness, Dino has a crush on Maika, which she is completely oblivious to. Oh where do I begin with this anime? The interaction between the characters is hilarious. Just seeing them switch from their true personalities and the "roles" at the cafe is a game changer. Watching Maika trying her hardest to maintain her job, and actually warm up to it is impressive. The only thing that annoyed me was the Dino/Maika arc. Viewers might be confused because of the age difference between the two. Maika is 16-years-old and Dino is 26 (side note: the age of consent in Japan is 13 years of age. Don't ask me why), and seeing these two constantly fail to get their feelings across could be quite painful to watch at times. I squirmed a couple times, I'm not going to lie. Overall, I give Blend-S a 3.5/5. It is fun to watch and the theme song is catchy, but the romance trope between Maika and Dino needs work. *Blogger note: I'm taking a hiatus next month. The Library Lady is going to the Southwest for a nice vacation to celebrate Mother's Day. I will be back in June for another (hopefully earlier) review.* Til next time and Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there, including my awesome momma. |
